What are the disadvantages of Hifu? We recommend reading this before getting Hifu treatment.

hifu ข้อเสีย

Every medical procedure has its advantages and disadvantages. Hifu skin tightening and wrinkle reduction also have drawbacks. Before undergoing the procedure, it's recommended to read up on all aspects of Hifu to ensure the treatment yields the results you expect.

In this article, Romrawin Clinic will discuss the disadvantages of Hifu, whether Hifu is dangerous, what the side effects are, and what can happen if you undergo Hifu treatment with substandard equipment or by an inexperienced doctor. Let's find out!

Is Hifu treatment dangerous?

Hifu (High Intensity Focus Ultrasound) This is a skin tightening device that uses ultrasound waves. These waves can stimulate tissue regeneration by generating localized heat in the deep layers of the skin, stimulating collagen production. This results in firmer, smoother skin safely, without causing burns or damage to the upper skin layers.

For safe Hifu treatment, it must be performed by an experienced physician using standard equipment. Otherwise, there may be dangers associated with Hifu. However, Hifu also has some drawbacks, which we will discuss in the next section.

Disadvantages of Hifu treatment.

Hifu treatment does have some drawbacks, such as:

  • The results may be unclear, or the method may not work.
If you've researched Hifu treatments, you'll often see claims that results can be seen from the first session. Even the Hifu machines themselves are often backed by clinical test results guaranteeing immediate lifting and tightening effects. However, some people may not see results after Hifu treatments. This can happen for several reasons.
    • This occurs because the doctor lacks sufficient experience and sets the energy levels incorrectly, resulting in insufficient energy reaching the underlying skin layers to address the underlying problems. Consequently, the results are unclear or ineffective after treatment.
    • Substandard Hifu machines can result in inconsistent energy delivery for treatment purposes.
    • The skin of the patient may be severely problematic, so much so that the results of a facelift are not clearly visible. Or, if there is a lot of fat, less energy may penetrate the subcutaneous layer, resulting in less than expected results.
  • The results after HIFU treatment don't last long.
Hifu treatment can repair structural deterioration of the skin, but it cannot prevent further deterioration over time. Therefore, the results after Hifu treatment are only temporary. However, to achieve longer-lasting results, repeat Hifu treatments can be performed as needed.
  • Not suitable for certain types of clients.
However, the use of ultrasound waves for skin tightening also has some limitations for individuals with the following health problems:
    • People with metal or electrical devices under the skin in the area to be treated.
    • People with open wounds or wounds that have not yet healed.
    • People with keloid scars.
    • Pregnant women
  • There are side effects after Hifu treatment.
Another drawback of Hifu is that it can cause side effects that make patients feel uncomfortable in the initial period after the procedure, such as skin pain, redness, and soreness.

What are some of the common side effects after Hifu treatment?

Hifu side effects

Hifu has drawbacks, such as common side effects after treatment, especially when performed by non-medical professionals, inexperienced doctors, or using substandard Hifu equipment. These include:

  • It hurts, and my skin is hot and red.
The Hifu machine emits ultrasound waves beneath the skin, which are then converted into heat. This raises the temperature beneath the skin, causing a warm sensation and redness. This redness is a normal post-Hifu reaction and will usually subside within a few hours. However, if you experience severe burning, it is recommended to consult a doctor immediately.
  • Sunburn
If the energy level is set too high, or if the treatment is performed with a substandard Hifu machine, there is a risk of facial burns after the procedure.
  • I have skin fatigue symptoms.
The energy waves penetrate deep into the skin, creating tiny wounds to stimulate the body to produce collagen for repair. This process may cause fatigue, which is normal and will gradually improve within 1-2 days.
  • Swollen face, water retention in the skin.
After Hifu treatment, you may experience skin swelling or inflammation. This is a normal side effect of Hifu treatment. You can take pain relievers or anti-inflammatory medication as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Facial numbness or asymmetry.
If Hifu treatment affects a nerve, it may cause facial numbness, facial paralysis, or drooping of the mouth. These symptoms usually appear 1-2 hours after the treatment and disappear within 2-3 weeks. However, the chances of this side effect occurring are quite low.

Precautions to take after HIFU treatment to reduce the chance of side effects.

After Hifu treatment, to minimize potential side effects, you can take the following self-care steps:

  • After Hifu treatment, avoid sun exposure and being outdoors for at least 1-2 weeks to prevent sunburn and allow the skin to fully regenerate collagen.
  • Do not massage or rub your face vigorously after Hifu treatment as this may cause skin inflammation. If you experience pain, take painkillers or use a cold compress instead.
  • Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol after Hifu treatment, as these contain free radicals that interfere with collagen stimulation, leading to suboptimal results.
  • You can apply your regular moisturizer and should regularly use a sunscreen with a high SPF to protect yourself from the sun.

Frequently asked questions about HIFU: Disadvantages.

Is a cheap HIFU buffet really effective?

Standard Hifu machines have limitations that prevent them from offering unlimited shot buffet promotions, as the energy delivery heads need to be replaced periodically after a period of use. If a clinic offers a cheap Hifu buffet promotion, you should suspect that the machine is a counterfeit, which may result in substandard results or even cause skin damage.

How many Hifu treatments are needed to see noticeable results?

Typically, a single Hifu treatment can yield good results. Visible results are usually seen about one month after the treatment, and the results can last for 6-12 months. Repeat Hifu treatments can be done to prolong the results. For consistently good results, we recommend having repeat Hifu treatments every 3 months.

Why do the effects of Hifu treatment not last as long compared to other procedures?

Depending on the brand of Hifu machine, general Hifu machines may not provide long-lasting results because the energy waves penetrate the skin unevenly, resulting in limited solution. However, for well-known Hifu brands such as... Ultraformer III Alternatively, Ulthera, which delivers high-energy waves consistently, is effective in addressing subcutaneous problems and can last up to 12 months.

Advantages and disadvantages of Hifu vs Ulthera vs Thermage vs Botox

Compare the advantages and disadvantages of Hifu treatment with other lifting and tightening procedures to determine which is right for you.

  • Hifu uses ultrasound waves to stimulate collagen production, lifting and tightening the skin, reducing sagging, and smoothing the complexion. It can be done frequently, but the results only last a few months and there is a risk of burns due to uneven energy delivery.
  • Ulther This is one of the higher-energy Hifu machines, delivering twice the power of other Hifu devices. It can deliver energy to the SMAS layer, stimulating new collagen production for effective lifting, tightening, and wrinkle reduction. During treatment, the doctor sees the skin's underlying problems in real time, allowing them to adjust the energy level to best suit each client. Results can last up to 12 months, but the procedure may be more painful than a standard Hifu treatment.
  • Thermage This is a radio frequency (RF) skin tightening device that also stimulates collagen production and effectively breaks down fat layers, resulting in firmer skin, reduced wrinkles, and decreased fat. The results last up to 12 months, but it may not be as effective at lifting and tightening as Hifu.
  • Botox This method reduces the chance of wrinkles by decreasing the activity of the muscles under the skin, resulting in less facial movement. Therefore, wrinkles caused by facial movements are reduced. The advantages are that it's inexpensive and provides immediate results. However, if injected incorrectly or if counterfeit Botox is used, it can be dangerous.

Summary of Hifu disadvantages.

Hifu has few drawbacks compared to the results it provides. It helps to lift and tighten, reduce wrinkles, and restore skin health from the very first treatment. Additional post-treatment self-care can further prolong the results.
